The incumbent is assigned to the Plant Genetics Research Unit (PGRU) in Columbia, Missouri. The mission of the PGRU is to develop new knowledge that expands understanding of the fundamental processes controlling increased production, improved quality and enhanced uses of corn, soybeans and wheat; and to utilize this knowledge to develop germplasm and crop management schemes that lead to increased farm profitability and sustainability of the nation's resource base.

Basic Qualification Requirements for Genetics series, 0440
Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.
Additional Requirements:
In addition to meeting the basic requirements for one of the series described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.
GS-12: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of the position (i.e. plant genetics or related field, including but not limited to plant genome engineering/editing, plant breeding, plant biology, plant sciences, agronomy, plant pathology, plant biotechnology, or plant biochemistry) OR 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.
GS-13: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal Service.
GS-14: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal Service.
Specialized Experience:
Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised.
The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-12 level are:
* Conducting plant genetic research related to crop improvement.
* Utilizing genetic techniques such as genome engineering/editing to identify or characterize plant quantitative/agronomic traits.
* Publishing research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals related to plant genetics or crop improvement.
The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-13 level are:
* Planning and conducting independent plant genetic research related to crop improvement.
* Developing genetic techniques to identify and characterize plant quantitative/agronomic traits.
* Publishing independent research results in peer-reviewed journals related to plant genetics or crop improvement.
* Supervising other researchers (technicians, students, post-docs, etc.) on plant genetics projects.
The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-14 level are:
* Planning and conducting independent and collaborative plant genetic research related to crop improvement.
* Developing and maintaining relationships with collaborators.
* Presenting information to professional societies on technical matters and practices in the field of plant genetics or crop improvement.
* Publishing independent research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals related to plant genetics or crop improvement.
* Serving in positions of leadership within the scientific community (Society board member, Journal Editor, etc.).
