The position in Grand Teton National Park is part of the Teton Interagency Fire program located at Colter Bay, WY, in Grand Teton National Park. The position in Yellowstone National Park is located in Yellowstone National Park, WY.
Serves as an Engine Captain on a Type VI wildland fire engine.Supervises employees and oversees operation of a Fire Engine Module. Provides technical and administrative supervision to an Engine Module. Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets and adjusts short term priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of the work.
Drives and operates a wildland fire engine, ensures the correct positioning, proper use, and operation. Performs and directs others in starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting engine speed and pump valves, laying hose, and using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustments for effective use of water and foam additives. Responsible for maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland urban interface/intermix situations. Ensures the engine is kept in a full state of readiness for emergency fire dispatch. Maintains currency as a fully qualified chain saw operator.
Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior in responding to wildland fire incidents. Makes initial evaluation of wildland fires, determines rates of spread, potential hazards, methods of fire management, deployment of crew, point of initial attack, types of tools to use, recommends strategies and tactics for management of wildland fires.
Participates in formal and informal training programs to comply with policy and regulations. Leads and participates in wildland fire and safety training. Participates in crew proficiency drills. Ensures own and other's welfare and safety in all aspects of assignments. Directs project work such as mechanical and prescribed fire plans, implementation and inventory.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
Grand Teton National Park Area Information: Located in northwestern Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park and the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway preserves a spectacular landscape rich with majestic mountains, pristine lakes, and extraordinary wildlife. The abrupt vertical rise of the jagged Teton Range contrasts with the sage-covered valley, creating world-renowned scenery that attracts visitors from all over the world.
This position is being filled in Colter Bay, Wyoming. Jackson (40 miles from Moose), is a small, outdoor recreation focused, thriving community of 10,000 year round residents. The town caters to four million tourists every summer, has an excellent hospital and medical community, a well-respected public school system, private schools, multiple grocery stores, excellent restaurants, and seasonal music and art festivals. Outdoor activities are available year round and include easy access to three ski resorts (Snow King Resort, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, and Grand Targhee), back-country and Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, camping, backpacking, horseback riding, boating, rafting, kayaking, hunting, cycling, mountain biking, and world class fly fishing, climbing, and mountaineering. The climate can be as extreme as the activities that are available. Winter temperatures range between lows of 20 degrees below zero to highs of 30 degrees. Summer temperatures are comfortable, with highs between 65 - 80 degrees.
A daycare center is located in Moose and an elementary school is located in Moran (11 miles from Colter Bay). Children attend Junior and Senior High Schools in Jackson with bus service provided. This is REQUIRED OCCUPANCY position.
Yellowstone National Park Area Information: This position will be located at park headquarters in Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park . Elevation at Mammoth is 6,200 feet. Temperatures vary from an average of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in summer to sub-zero at times in winter. A school is available, with kindergarten through 12, in Gardiner , Montana , five miles north of headquarters. Free bus transportation is provided for school children between Mammoth and Gardiner. Many community facilities such as stores, a drugstore, day care, motels, and restaurants are available in Gardiner. A medical clinic is available in Mammoth. Operations of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on employee during fire activities.
Working Conditions: The work is primarily performed in forest, range and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with vegetation, and in smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures vary from above 100 degrees F to below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation and fire entrapment. Employee must adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements, dust and smoke, poor sleeping and eating conditions and unpredictable sets of circumstances. Employee may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time.
