Responsibilities include participating in the investigation of aircraft accidents and the study of aeromedical factors that affect aviation safety. Originates, formulates, coordinates, and personally participates in a high priority program of aviation safety research and aeromedical accident investigation which involves the study of human performance and other bio-aeronautical findings from aircraft accidents.
Studies medical and other data to determine the pattern and distribution of sudden and subtle pilot incapacitations, various diseases and the causes of various types of injuries in the flying population involved in mishaps. Studies operational problems in aviation with a view toward exploring the interface with aerospace medicine and defining phenomena that affect aerospace safety. Records aeromedical review findings in specialized databases/registries. Prepares reports and memoranda that describe the results of aeromedical data evaluations such as that proceeding from the review of airmen medical records, toxicology reports, media publications, airmen registry records, and other information resources pertinent to aircraft accidents and incidents.
As a result of the aeromedical review of accidents, provides guidance in aeromedical certification, research, occupational medicine, and education practices so as to enhance those processes. Maintains the aeromedical review of accidents program and improves the intricacies of that process including the institution, management, and continued improvement of the quality assurance measures. Monitors the resulting human factors and biomedical data to determine if trends develop that warrant remedial action. Formulates recommendations as required for the most appropriate interventions. Develops methods for data management of medical information derived from the investigation of aircraft accidents to facilitate research and systematic surveillance of that information.
Serves as an expert consultant, advising and assisting professional personnel within the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), FAA, and other requesting agencies with regard to special techniques in the medical investigation of aircraft accidents and the interface between aerospace operations and aerospace medicine. Provides professional leadership in aerospace medicine to FAA and NTSB personnel who may be assigned to work in the field or other modes of aircraft accident investigation.
Supports the Office of Aerospace Medicine, CAMI, and AAM-600 by participating in joint efforts with internal and external groups concerned with aviation safety. Collaborates with the Aerospace Medical Research Division teams in the aeromedical investigation of aircraft accidents and research questions resulting from the same. Responsible for the execution of these aeromedical reviews with the support of other Division physician personnel.
The incumbent functions with minimal administrative supervision from the Division Manager. Scientific and technical decisions made by the incumbent will be in accordance with the policy guidelines of the FAA. Medical accident field participation will be at the request of the NTSB and FAA (AVP) official for assistance in the Human Performance, Survival Factors, or other Purposes.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.

Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.
An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association, (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: All successful applicants must have 3 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled (Aerospace medicine) or equivalent experience and training that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and is typically in or related to the position being filled.
