This position is located in Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR). The incumbent for this position serves under the general supervision of the Automotive Mechanic Supervisor in the Vehicle Repair Shop, Transportation Branch, and Museum Support Services. Physical Requirements: The incumbent makes repairs while the vehicle is overhead, and where the parts worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires him/her to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. Quickly and repeatedly, adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions. Keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position. Make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects. Match or detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness. The incumbent frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 20 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent may lift and carry items that weigh about 50 pounds.
Work Environment: Most work at this grade is done inside where it is drafty and noisy, and fumes from vehicles are usually present. The incumbent must frequently stand on hard surfaces for long periods. There are times when must crawl under vehicles and make repairs while on hard, usually damp surfaces. The incumbent is occasionally called upon to perform repairs outside, sometimes in bad weather. Dirt, dust, and grease are always present. Vehicle fluids, such as battery acids and hydraulic fluids, may cause burns or irritate the skin. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns and strains.
