Duties
As a Fish Biologist within the Great Lakes Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
- Plan, organize and implement limited biological investigations that affect fishery resources.
- Conduct routine field experiments to test scientific hypotheses.
- Gather, organize and interpret a wide variety of biological, ecological, pathological, public use data.
- Develop and maintain computer databases; gather, analyze, tabulate and summarize scientific, programmatic and/or budgetary data.
- Analyze data, perform scientific tests, conducts studies on existing or proposed practices.
- Driving will be a regular duty of the position
Physical Demands
The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; and bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The work requires moderate physical ability and average agility and dexterity.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
- Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. - You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Eligibility Requirements
In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Recent Graduate Program you must meet the following requirements:
- You must be a recent graduate who has completed, within the previous two years, an associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution such as an accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum. Note: Certificate program is defined as post-secondary education in a qualifying educational institution equal to at least one academic year of full-time study that’s part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.
- OR You must be currently enrolled in a qualifying degree program as described above AND expect to complete your degree requirements no later than December 2019. If you do not complete your degree requirements by December 2019 you will be ineligible for consideration under this program;
- Veterans who were precluded from applying due to their military service obligation begin their 2-year eligibility period upon release or discharge from active duty; however, eligibility for these veterans cannot exceed 6 years from the date on which the degree or certificate was obtained. The date of release or discharge from active duty should be later than the date the degree or certificate was obtained.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic requirement for Fishery Biologist, all grade levels.
A. Degree: major in biological science that included: at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; and at least 12 semester hours or the equivalent in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess course work in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate).
**OR
B. Combination of education and experience-courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e. at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours or the equivalent were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours or the equivalent were in the animal sciences, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope, and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-09:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:
**Two years of progressively higher level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) or a master's or equivalent graduate degree in fishery biology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.
**OR one year of appropriate professional experience that is in fishery biology, conservation biology, evolutionary ecology, aquatic restoration ecology, conservation genetics or other related discipline that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position and that is equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience could include assisting higher graded ecologists, conservation biologist, geneticists, or fishery biologists in the application of standard or innovative protocols and approaches to apply principles of biological diversity, adaptive management theories to aquatic systems, development of aquatic restoration strategies, development and application of conservation ecology and genetic principals, or experience in conservation/restoration aquaculture facilities. At this level the work is closely controlled, and the supervisor or higher graded specialist assigns the work with clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use.

For GS-11:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level: **Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in fishery biology or other directly related field of study or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in fishery biology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skill and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.
**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in fishery biology, conservation biology, evolutionary ecology, aquatic restoration ecology, conservation genetics that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience could include assisting higher graded ecologists, conservation biologists, geneticists, or fishery biologists in the application of standard or innovative protocols and approaches to apply principles of biological diversity, adaptive management theories to aquatic development and application of conservation ecology and genetic principles, analysis of spatiotemporal/aquatic ecology, conduct of threats assessments, or experience in conservation/restoration aquaculture facilities. At this level the work involves following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures; solving minor problems and making routine decisions.
