This job opportunity announcement is only opened to Permanent Employees of the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center who currently work in the Facilities Management Care Line and have worked there for at least 90 days.
The MEDVAMC has a very large broad scope radiation safety program involving both radioactive materials and machine-produced radiation (x-rays). Radioactive materials are used in a large nuclear medicine department and in research. Machine-produced radiation is found in the many x-ray and CT units located throughout the hospital and several Community Based Outpatient Clinics and in radiation therapy. This position has the primary responsibility for implementing MED VAMC's radiation safety program in all of these areas.
The incumbent is the medical center's technical expert in radiation safety and decontamination matters and has direct access to senior management. He/she is called upon by senior management, medical staff and scientists to recommend courses of action when complex radiation safety problems are encountered.
The incumbent designs, establishes, and implements written policies and procedures for a Radiation Safety Program encompassing the clinical and research use of radionuclides and machine produced radiation. This includes the use of new imaging and treatment modalities, ensuring safety and compliance with the radioactive material permit under the VHA Master Materials License, all applicable regulations, VHA directives, and Medical Center policies.
Responds to radiation incidents involving patients, employees, or visitors and takes appropriate corrective action(s) as a subject matter expert in order to mitigate/minimize the impact to the individuals and the facility. Evaluates radiation exposures to patients, employees, and visitors and makes appropriate recommendations as a subject matter expert in order to ensure that they are mitigated or are as infrequently occurring as practicable. Reports exposures and recommendations to the Radiation Safety Committee. Determines when incidents are required to be reported to agencies outside of the VA and completes the required reports. Advises researchers on the unusual, complex, and critical problems that they encounter when they review and recommend changes to experimental procedures, and when they respond to emergencies involving radioactive materials and x-ray producing equipment.
Provides radiological physics support for Medical Center activities involving the use of medical radiation in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Conducts and supervises audits and scientific assessments of all clinical and research radioactive material safety programs to ensure compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and VA regulations. Identifies and evaluates radiation hazards and recommends corrective actions to eliminate or control these hazards. If necessary, the incumbent takes immediate action to abate severe hazards or to shut down operations that are out of compliance.
Tracks patient radiation exposures and investigates incidents of radiation bums. Maintains the facility fluoroscopy safety policy and addresses diagnostic medical physics issues.
Coordinates with providers in developing and implementing quality assurance programs In order to ensure that imaging and treatment uses of radioactive material and machine produced radiation are optimum for patient care, and that employees, patients, and visitors are protected. Maintains compliance with regulations and best practices. Provides radiological physics support for Medical Center activities involving the use of medical radiation in imaging. This program includes/involves acceptance testing of new imaging equipment, the testing of equipment annually and after major repairs, daily and monthly tests by imaging technologists, recommending and implementing corrective actions based on those tests, evaluating image quality, evaluating protocols for computerized tomography in order to assist radiologists in optimizing image quality versus radiation exposure, and evaluating the overall program in order to determine its effectiveness and recommend and implement improvements.
Participates in VA-wide committees and work groups to develop new policies and procedures. Participates in the implementation of new diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceutical procedures by obtaining regulatory approval, developing radiation safety protocols and ensuring implementation of those protocols. Trains in the safe implementation of these new procedures.
