The VA Long Beach Healthcare System is seeking a Registered Nurse to be a member of the Resource Pool. The Resource (Float Pool) is designed to cover staffing shortages that occur on a day-to-day basis. The Resource/Float Pool RN is assigned to a nursing unit by the Cardiology Nurse Manager based on staffing needs in the Outpatient Care Service to include Emergency Department, Cath Lab, Gastrointestinal Lab and the individual's competency level.

The Nurse II selected for this position will be under the direct supervision of the Cardiology Nurse Manager. Incumbent is responsible for the delivery of patient care in assigned areas based on scientific principles and the nursing process, and functions as a leader by assuming additional responsibility for improvement of patient care. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
(1) Utilizes the nursing process in managing, developing, implementing and evaluating each patient's individual plan of care with an interdisciplinary team to attain specific clinical outcomes.
(2) Implements nursing interventions as necessary for assessing patient response to care.
(3) Continuously monitors the environment for potential and/or actual safety hazards. Assures adherence to strict safety procedures by all staff.
(4) Guides and directs patient care delivery of support staff.
(5) Participates in and initiates Quality Assessment and Improvement program activities as applicable to the clinical area.
(6) Promotes collaborative practice to provide and expedite quality patient care along the health care continuum; acts as patient advocate to assure appropriateness and quality of care.
(7) Assesses learning needs of patients and implements appropriate teaching plan.
As a Staff Nurse you will provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill and injured veterans. Duties include documenting observations, assessments, and changes in patient's condition; collaborating with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes; providing a full range of nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavior problems; and accountable for meeting and maintaining the qualification standards and functional statements of assigned grade. Our facility is seeking individuals who possess good organizational skills which enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team.
AGE, DEVELOPMENT, AND CULTURAL NEEDS OF PATIENTS:
The population of male and female Veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. Age-related and cultural interventions appropriate to the cognitive, physical, and emotional needs will be employed at all times, tailored to the individual patient, incorporating knowledge of changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development.
CUSTOMER SERVICE REQUIREMENTS:
LBVAHCS embraces patient-family centered care principles. The incumbent practices good customer service in all work activities. Must be poised and articulate in communicating with people of varied educational levels and varied ethnic backgrounds. Makes caring for the Veteran his/her priority while in the work setting and demonstrates customer service principles in all aspects of work. Willing to work cooperatively as a member of a team in all assignments.
ON-GOING EDUCATION AND TRAINING/COMPETENCY VALIDATION:
Basic Life Support (BLS) required for RNs in direct patient care positions per policy. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required in specific specialty areas and assignments per policy. Incumbent will be self-directed in completing orientation and on-going mandatory education. Will actively participate in annual competency assessment and validation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
OTHER FACTORS:
This position potentially requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital. Some positions require rotation of tours or indefinite work on non-administrative tours as established by the immediate supervisor. Self-motivated in the pursuit of meeting professional work standards. If the incumbent is a purchase card holder, performs the duties of a Government-wide Purchase Care Program cardholder in support of his/her service/department/service line. The cardholder is required to complete all required training courses as directed by the agency/organization program coordinator. Responsible for the proper use of the purchase card, being knowledgeable and complying with assigned spending regulations. Complies with all Federal, VA, and local purchase card program regulations.
