Studies records and files covering mishaps, injuries, and equipment maintenance data. Inspects worksites, machine and equipment operations, environmental conditions, work practices, protective devices and equipment, and safety procedures. Conducts research assignments using internet technology to prepare for onsite inspections or in response to requests for information.
At the GS-11 level, you will plan, schedule, and conduct a full range of inspections in establishments and worksites where there is a strong probability of encountering hazardous work processes and materials, and unsafe environmental conditions from minor to serious in severity. Prepare for inspections by conducting file and record reviews, including case files or previous inspections to become familiar with work processes, operations, and standards applicable to the workplace to be inspected. Conducts investigation of accidents which may involve one or more fatalities, a large number of injuries or serious accidents, or other unsafe conditions. Conduct workplace analyses and reviews establishments' occupational and safety and health programs to determine the hazardous conditions that may have contributed to the injury or illness. Assists agency attorneys in the preparation of contested cases for hearing before agency review judges; testifies under examinations conducted by attorneys representing the agency and the employer. Assists in the conduct of special studies and the preparation of specialist reports of findings and conclusions.
