Physical Demands: Essential functions require arduous exertion for protracted periods of time such as, but not limited to, extensive running, walking, climbing, kneeling, stooping, pulling hoses, jumping and twisting. Duties involve rigorous field work requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work requires prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity. Duties include demands for strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. Operation of some specialized fire equipment can place extended physical stress on employee during fire activities. The duties of this position require that the incumbent meet the arduous level of physical fitness as measured by the current physical fitness testing standards.
Work Environment: The work is primarily performed in forest and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with thick tangled vegetation, smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures commonly exceed 100 degrees F and fall below freezing. Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, and falling and rolling material. Employee must adjust and cope with exposure to weather elements, dust and smoke, poor bivouac and eating situations under an unpredictable set of circumstances. Employee may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time. The hazardous nature of the work requires that personal protective equipment be worn (boots, hardhat, gloves, flame resistant clothing, etc.). Work may require travel by light fixed-wing or rotor-wing aircraft.
These are Career Seasonal appointment(s). You will be in a pay status for at least six months, but less than 12 months a year. When work or funds are not available, you will be placed in a non-pay status.
These positions are subject to the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard and Guide selective placement factors for a Senior Wildland Firefighter and requires the following Selective Placement Factors.
Selective Placement Factors: These positions require special qualifications that have been determined essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factors will be rated not qualified (currency not required):

Specialized Experience Requirements:

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Examples of Specialized Experience to qualify for the GS-05: One year of experience performing basic fire line activities such as line construction, hose layout, operations of pumps and accessories, lopping and scattering of fuels using hand tools and holding, patrolling, monitoring, and mop-up operations. Moves dirt, chops brush, small trees, etc. to construct fire line. Independently or with one or two other crew members, performs tree falling, backfire and burnout, mobile and stationary engine attack, construction of helispots, specialized helitack operations, and hover hookups.
Substitution of Education: Successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a Bachelor's Degree with a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position; or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering or wildland fire science. No more than six semester hours in mathematics is creditable.
If qualifying based on education, you will need to clearly state your undergraduate/graduate degree(s) and submit your college transcripts or a listing of your college courses that includes hours and grades.
