A physician in the Mental Health Service (MHS) at the VA Portland Health Care System is a licensed, independent provider who is highly skilled in the evaluation and treatment of patients with a broad range of behavioral health problems. The physician serves as an addiction psychiatrist for the Substance Abuse Treatment Program (SATP), Opiate Treatment Program (OTP) and, in general, the Mental Health Division (MHD) of the VA Portland Health Care System. The psychiatrist's administrative duties include serving as the Program Director for the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship.
The program is a fully ACGME accredited one-year fellowship funded for 2 fellows per year by the Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA). The psychiatrist will be responsible for all aspects of administrative oversight of the program, including meeting all ACGME, OHSU GME and VA GME regulations, reassessing current rotations and curricula, and developing and implementing new rotations and curricula as appropriate. The training team consists of the program director, an education coordinator and addiction psychiatry staff at VAPORHCS, OHSU, and other community rotation sites. VA-based rotations include SATP, OTP, Buprenorphine program, complex smoking cessation, complex pain clinic, liver clinic, HIV clinic and consultation/liaison psychiatry service.
The psychiatrist's primary clinical duties involve providing direct patient care within the outpatient substance treatment program, opiate treatment program and medical oversight of ambulatory detoxification programming. MHD utilizes an interdisciplinary team model with addiction psychiatrists functioning as core members of treatment teams. The incumbent will be expected to provide supervision of OHSU addiction psychiatry fellows and other academic affiliate psychiatry residents and medical students in the direct care of Veterans with complex psychiatric needs including substance use disorders.
