The primary purpose of the Progressive Care Unit Nurse II RN position is to demonstrate leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaboration strategies with others to provide comprehensive nursing care to patients assigned to the assigned unit where conditions are usually of a semi-critical nature. The Progressive Care Unit RN possesses the clinical foundation on which the cognitive and practical expertise necessary to care for diverse and complex progressive care disease processes can be constructed. He/she is proficient in his/her understanding of the basic pathophysiological concepts, treatments, and expected outcomes associated with the progressive care environment. He/she applies the nursing process throughout physiological and psychosocial assessments, which assists in the organizing care interventions related to clinical acuity and needs. He/she demonstrates the highest levels of professional standards and ethical behaviors with respect to interpersonal relations, teamwork, and personal responsibility and compliance with institutional protocols and practices.
The Progressive Care RN demonstrates proficiency in practice based on conscious and deliberate planning and can be called upon to response to facility wide code responses (e.g. code blue). He/she demonstrates clinical competence and leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others such as patients, their family members/significant others and members of the interdisciplinary team. He/she is self-directed in goal setting, and in the management of complex patient situations utilizing the nurse process. He/she demonstrates the ability to identify an issue, analyze it, develop and implement interventions. The Progressive Care Unit RN completes initial assessments and reassessments of patient condition and response to treatment. He/she initiates follow-up as recommended while administering the prescribed therapies using appropriate judgment; evaluation of therapies is pertinent and timely. The Progressive Care Unit Nurse II RN focuses on problems, initiates referrals to other disciplines and/or services as appropriate. He/she accurately documents in the medical record patient findings, assessments, and care provided.

The Washington DC VA Medical Center, located within sight of the Nation's Capital, is the only health care system that specifically provides care to Veterans. Offering tertiary care in a Complexity Level 1A hospital, allows ours staff to provide comprehensive primary and specialty care in medicine, surgery, neurology and psychiatry. The Medical Center has 164 acute care beds, 30 Psychosocial Residential Rehabilitation Treatment beds, and a 20-suite Fisher House. Also, the Medical Center is home to an adjacent 120-bed Community Living Center which provides Veterans with geriatric long-term care, hospice and palliative care.
