The Birmingham VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for one (1) part time Medical Instrument Technician - Polysomnography, GS-8, to work 24 hours per week, 48 hours per pay period within our Neurology Department.

This represents the full performance level. At this level Polysomnographic Technicians are able to interact fully with the patient and physician to diagnose sleep disorders including those that are uncommon or rare. They are able to conduct full sleep studies including overnight studies and evaluate the relationship of events, sleep stages, and possible medical conditions which influence or result from events occurring during sleep. They anticipate problems likely to occur during the sleep study and prepare for such situations, make changes in established procedures, or recommend alternative courses of action. They are able to mentor lower graded technicians.
Work is primarily performed in patient care areas, inpatient and outpatient. Extensive interaction with patients, staff, physicians, family members, and visitors involved. The selectee is able to conduct full scoring of sleep/wake stages and studies including overnight studies, extended EEG studies, and evaluate the relationship of events, sleep stages, and possible medical conditions which influence or result from events occurring during sleep. The selectee anticipates problems likely to occur during the sleep study and is able to prepare for such situations, suggest changes in established procedures, or recommended alternative courses of action. Displays proficiency and performs at a level of excellence in all sleep diagnostic procedures and other related procedures in accordance to the guidelines established by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Must be reliable, able to work independently and be self-motivated.
Work Schedule: Sunday and Monday nights, 7 PM to 730 AM (two 12 hour shifts per week)
