This position is located on a Forest Service Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center. The incumbent of this position serves as a recreation assistant responsible for organizing and administering a conventional basic recreational and physical fitness program or segments of an entire program. The duties described are at the full performance level (GS-7).
This position participates in the overall implementation of program plans developed by a Recreational Specialist or other higher-level specialist. The employee instructs plans, manages, coordinates and schedules specific portions of the Center’s recreational and physical fitness activities.
The employee instructs and counsels students in positive social and employability skills for workplace success. He or she evaluates these characteristics for each student and conducts individual counseling sessions to correct problems or refers serious maladjustment problems to the higher-level supervisor as necessary.
The employee conducts, organizes and plans a variety of conventional basic recreational and physical fitness training activities for students. He or she conducts physical education classes and supervises tournaments. The incumbent plans, organizes, and coordinates the details of recurring, special events, evenings, weekly and weekend recreational activities. The employee instructs, teaches, and coaches students in isometrics and circuit training; aquatic programs e.g., swimming, boating, water safety, water sports, tournaments, games, rescue and related physical fitness activities; and safety and first aid.
The employee participates in the day-to-day administration and operations of recreation or sporting facilities. He or she will be responsible for setting the hours of operation, assigning staff personnel and developing an inventory control system. The employee inspects the maintenance of recreation facilities. He or she demonstrates safety techniques to students who are involved in such activities as camping, water sports, or fishing.
The incumbent operates government vehicles to transport students to and from off-site activities. This may include operating buses with air brakes.
This position requires the selectee to possess or obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and therefore, is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Department of Transportation (DOT)/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Program. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use unless they currently occupy a TDP under the DOT/Forest Service Alcohol and Controlled Substances Testing Program. Final appointment is conditional on a negative drug test. This announcement constitutes 30 days advance notice. Incumbents of this position will be required to submit to a urinalysis on an ongoing random basis, after appointment as directed.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a commercial driver's license (CDL) within 90 days of appointment date as a condition of employment.
There is no substitution of education for specialized experience.
The duties of this position are performed during evening and nighttime hours and on weekends and holidays.
