WHAT DOES A PHYSICAL SECURITY SPECIALIST DO? As a Physical Security Specialist you will be required to frequently access sensitive but unclassified information. You will be responsible for accessing various studies, projects, and work assignments relating to the implementation, administration, and evaluation of the IRS emergency management and physical security programs ensuring the protection of employees, assets, operations, and information. You will make use of policy and technical knowledge in completing work assignments and projects. In this role, you will pro-actively identify program needs and independently initiate and perform a wide range of emergency management and physical security activities and projects.

GS-07 LEVEL: At least one (1) year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 level that demonstrated experience applying security program concepts, policies, and practices. This experience must include assignments that must have shown completion of the following, or the equivalent: Assisting in conducting security reviews in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the security program; Assisting in performing basic risk assessments with a team to verify and ensure minimum security standards are implemented and identified; Administering less complex physical security programs (e.g., lock, key, combinations, separating employees' clearance); Assisting in performing basic administration of security equipment contracts and associated budgets. OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows:
One (1) year of graduate level education at an accredited college or university in a field of study such as national security studies, information technology, criminal justice. OR
Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) may be met by having a Bachelor's degree, with one of the following: A GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for all completed undergraduate courses or those completed in the last two years of study, or a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale for all courses in the major field of study or those courses in the major completed in the last two years of study, or rank in the upper one third of the class in the college, university, or major subdivision, or membership in a national honor society recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies.
GS-09 LEVEL: You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes: Experience applying physical security concepts, policies, standards and practices; Assisting in conducting security reviews in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the security program; Assisting in performing basic risk assessments (facilities equivalent to Inter-agency security Committee (ISC) standards level 1 or level 2) with a team to verify and ensure minimum security standards are implemented and identified; Administering less complex physical security programs (e.g., lock, key, combinations, separating employees' clearance); Performing basic administration of security equipment contracts and associated budgets. A master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field of study such as national security studies, criminal justice or management. OR

The assignments must have shown completion of the following, or the equivalent: Conducting security reviews in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the security program; Performing less complex risk assessments (facilities equivalent to Inter-agency security Committee (ISC) standards level 1 or level 2) and assist with large site assessments to verify and ensure minimum security standards are implemented and identified; Providing technical assistance to managers and employees to ensure security measures are met and to resolving security issues; Drafting written reports of findings from risk assessments, compliance security reviews and site surveys; Providing limited advice and guidance on budgetary requirements for security equipment and systems. OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field of study such as national security studies, criminal justice, information technology or management. OR
3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a graduate degree in a field of study such as national security studies, criminal justice, information technology or management. One year of graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
