This position serves as the Chief Veterinary Medical Officer (CVMO) located in the VHA Office for Research and Development. The CVMO is the senior policy and supervisory veterinarian and directs the VA animal research support program.

Providing clinical support for laboratory animals used in research activities;
Advising on the proper housing, containment, use, surveillance, environmental enrichment, and healthcare of research animals;
Planning and implementing strategies to prevent infectious agents from entering the animal facility;
Ensuring the use of laboratory animals is consistent with humane principles and the program meets all applicable Federal regulations and guidelines;
Consulting with research staff to determine the most suitable animal model for achieving desired research goals and minimizing pain and distress to animals;
Providing guidance on surgical and post-operative measures;
Conducting in-person and phone briefings for print and web media outlets as well as for members of Congress and their staff members, and conducting on-camera interviews;
Testifying at Congressional hearings that concern animal research topics, representing and defending agency policy positions;
Performing related duties as required.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.

Physical Requirements: The work involves physical exertion to investigate conditions in animal facilities across the country during site visits of VA animal facilities, and during inspections of the local facility. During site visits, activities include prolonged standing, substantial walking between buildings, stooping and bending to look at caging, and climbing flights of stairs. During site visits and local rounds, the work involves exposure to soiled animal bedding and animals infected with experimental pathogens. Cage washing equipment is very noisy, and many of the floors in the facility can represent slip and fall hazards. Entry into animal rooms nationally and locally requires the use of special sanitized protective clothing and gear such as hair covers, masks, gowns, shoe covers, and gloves.
Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
