As an ARCHIVES TECHNICIAN, GS-1421-7, your typical work assignments may include the following under supervision:
Formulates and implements approved plans, in consultation with the supervisor, for the arrangement of manuscript collections and office records. Makes special searches for missing information and documents. Prepares cross references for related materials in other series or collections. In the course of arrangement, assumes immediate responsibility for identifying preservation problems and takes action on all but the most technically difficult. Identifies and withdraws materials from files that may not be made available for research use because of donor imposed or other access restrictions.
Conducts in-depth research to respond to written and oral inquiries. Prepares detailed draft responses transmitting results of searches. Furnishes records and reproductions to researchers and refiles materials after use. Ensures proper handling of materials in research rooms. Answers questions about a wide range of holdings, but refers unique or precedent setting issues and/or inquiries to staff archivists.
Prepares detailed internal finding aids such as document, folder, and shelf lists, registers, indexes, and card files. Identifies and describes series in collections in terms of subject, chronology, volume, arrangement, and cross-references to related materials in the holdings. Conducts research in published and non-published sources and other collections of records to obtain information about individuals and organizations to be used in more complex finding aids.
Assists in the accessioning and disposal of records. Evaluates their physical condition, checks for completeness, places materials in storage containers, and shelve containers. Assists in arranging for the transfer or disposal of materials as necessary.
Removes materials from files that require preservation or rehabilitation and assumes immediate responsibility for accomplishing particular repair projects. Incumbent determines which materials require professional repair and rehabilitation, prepares forms, and follows through on forwarding material to the proper preservation facility. Incumbent may take immediate corrective action for minor repairs.
You may qualify at the GS-07 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:
Have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level of Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector that demonstrates your ability to provide research room and reference service, archival work related to preparing document and folder title lists, describing, arranging, rehousing, and identifying preservation concerns.
