This position works in the Division of Visitor and Resource Protection under the supervision of the Fee and Revenue Manager. The purpose of the position is to provide excellent customer services to visitors and to internal/external customers. Assist visitors with determining the appropriate entrance pass to purchase, check validity of existing passes, collect appropriate fees and permits, and accurately report all revenue collected on a daily shift report. Secure all accountable property and money as well as secure facility. Provide limited in-park dispatch services. Knowledge and use of RM 22A for Fee Collection is used for this function.
This is a Pathways Student Intern position - Pathways Indefinite: Eligible for Conversion. Work schedule is full time during winter, spring, and summer breaks. Position is part time during the fall and spring semesters with a minimum of 16 hours per week and a maximum of 32 hours per week. Holidays, evenings, and weekend are required.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment as we've indicated in this job announcement. You must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of your appointment. To verify that you do, we will require proof of your continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout your internship. Failure to do so will result in termination of your internship and employment.
Physical Demands: Standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting of moderately heavy items and sedentary work is required.
Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money.
Working Conditions: Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to
extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight.
Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation, rugged terrain or dense populations. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods. Duties may be performed alone in isolated locations.

White Sands National Monument is a unique geologic park with the world's largest gypsum dune field, protects unusual natural and cultural resources, including endemic species and Pleistocene mega-fauna trackways. The largest and most visited national park unit in New Mexico, the monument is surrounded by federal lands and has a unique relationship with the Department of Defense (White Sands Missile Range) in support of military training and testing. Over 600,000 annual visitors enjoy year round hiking, backcountry camping, picnicking, and dune sledding.
The monument is 15 miles west of Alamogordo (population 35,000) and is within two hours North of international border city of El Paso, TX and one hour east of Las Cruces, NM. The housing market is thriving in Alamogordo and most major amenities can be found in the tri-city area.
