As a Hydrologist in the Intermountain Region (IMR), Natural Resources Division your duties will Include technical assistance and consultation to IMR parks, NPS Inventory & Monitoring Networks (I&M), Intermountain Regional Office (IMRO), and NPS Water Resources Division (WRD) through annual and immediate requests. Technical assistance includes: a) developing park-specific or network-specific comprehensive water resource strategies; b) preparing funding proposals for water resources research and monitoring; c) planning for and deploying water quality monitoring; d) training NPS staff on field techniques and processes for monitoring water resources; e) ensuring water resource considerations are appropriately integrated into park operations and planning; f) coordinating water quality and hydrology/hydrogeology analyses with NPS experts or contractors for in-park National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents; and g) providing assistance in evaluating the potential park water resource impacts from internal and/or external development and operations.
Providing advice to regional and field staff on implementation of NPS water resource management policies, guidelines, and strategies to ensure compliance with legal requirements and consistency on a Regional and Servicewide basis.
Establishing contacts and maintaining cooperative relationships with other federal land management agencies, EPA, State water quality regulators, and research and technical organizations. Serves on intra-agency and inter-agency working groups and committees in areas related to water resources.
Providing oversight for NPS contractors and collaborates with NPS cooperators on technical projects that are often multi-agency. This may include engagement on water quality monitoring and database development/operation. This often entails coordinating development of work plans, scopes of work, budgets, or proposals for funding.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments
may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain,
volcanoes, caves, firelines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying
in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for limited telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
