Major Duties:
The incumbent is a Research Geneticist Animal in the Genetics, Breeding, and Animal Health Research Unit of the United States Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC), located in Clay Center, Nebraska. The mission of the USMARC is to improve production efficiency while maintaining a lean, high quality, and safe product. The mission of the Research Unit is to define the role of genetics in animal, pathogen, and microbial community interactions in domestic livestock production with the goal of developing effective genetic strategies to improve meat quality, animal health, and production efficiency. The incumbent is responsible for carrying out genetic and genomic research with the goal enhancing health, efficiency, and sustainability of sheep within Project "Genetic Research to Enhance Efficient and Sustainable Production of Beef Cattle and Sheep". The incumbent will lead experiments using sheep in support of ARS National Program 101 (Food Animal Production). Experiments are often multigeneration and multidisciplinary, involving over 2,000 breeding ewes. The incumbent is responsible for understanding fundamental constraints of the sheep industry, identifying research opportunities, designing and conducting innovative experiments, analyzing data, writing manuscripts, and disseminating results and technical advice to many segments of the sheep industry.
Research objectives for sheep genetics are: 1) evaluate sheep germplasm for favorable maternal characteristics in a pasture lambing system, 2) evaluate parentage identification strategies for sheep, 3) evaluate selection strategies for resistance to ovine progressive pneumonia and resistance to parasitic helminths in sheep, and 4) identify genomic variants associated with efficient production and resistance to health challenges. Methodologies used to address these objectives will be quantitative genetics analyses, whole genome association analyses, analyses of genetic markers for productivity and disease resistance, and large-scale experimental design.
