The Orthopedic Staff Physician is administratively and clinically responsible to the Chief, Surgical Service. The Orthopedic Section consists of two Staff Physicians, two mid-level providers and two Registered Nurses. The practice is primarily focused on the treatment and management of degenerative joint disease - knees, hips and shoulders, including joint replacement. Fracture management, carpal tunnel and trigger finger release, some soft tissue and possible hand surgery may also be performed (no spine management or surgery, not a sports medicine practice). Arthroscopy skills are required. Workload per orthopedic provider consists of 35-45 clinic encounters per week, surgical volume runs 5-8 cases per week with an average of 3-5 inpatient admissions per week.
The candidate works cohesively and comprehensively within the framework of Surgical Services administrative and clinical requirements. The candidate uses assessment skills to promptly examine new patients thoroughly, using appropriate clinical, laboratory and other pertinent data. The candidate accurately interprets and evaluates clinical data for determining diagnosis and clinical status. The candidate initiates and completes orthopedic operative procedures appropriately. The candidate selects, develops, and conducts literature search on researchable problems that are relevant to the health care of Veterans. The candidate prepares timely, sound, and orderly reports.
