These positions are in the Nevada State Office, Reno, Nevada. Information about Reno and the surrounding areas can be found at Reno/Sparks Chamber of Commerce.
This position is for students accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, on a full- or half-time basis (as defined by the academic institution in which the student is enrolled).
This is a temporary, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected not-to-exceed 1 year. This type of appointment is intended only for temporary projects, to perform labor-intensive tasks not requiring subject matter expertise, or to fill traditional summer jobs. The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which it shall document the anticipated start and end dates for this temporary appointment.
Physical Demands: Work is primarily sedentary. Some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items is required.
Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate controlled office. Occasional travel may be required. This position may be required to visit field sites where risks may include exposure to inclement weather and potential injury from falls, strains, bites, stings, etc. The incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or designated by the Safety Officer.

The intermediate level trainee performs developmental level duties with close supervision and involvement of a higher level specialist and/or supervisor, and with progressively increasing difficulty and complexity which are integrated with qualifying college curriculum being followed. These duties are designed to provide the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge and work experience in the field and the incumbent will perform the full range of standard assignments and resolve recurring problems under the guidance and direction of a higher-level specialist and/or supervisor:
Performs spatial data tasks in accordance with established standards and training to include general data entry; data analysis and manipulation; database design and management; georeferencing; and data backup and maintenance tasks. Performs recurring transactions within geospatial databases and systems to integrate data files, and keep spatial and non-spatial data accurate and in compliance. This may include completing smaller segments of long term or broader scope geospatial analysis projects.
Assembles material needed for GIS projects such as paper maps, tabular data, digital products, and general information of a geographical nature.
Uses GIS and office automation software to create a variety of standard documents such as correspondence, memorandums, fact sheets, written communications and organization presentations, and map products. Documents may include some scientific/GIS terminology and/or statistical data. Produces final, error-free documents, ensuring correct punctuation, spelling, capitalization, and grammar.
This position falls under the Group Qualification Standards for Administration and Office Support Student Trainee Series.
The selectee is not eligible for promotion without competition.
This is a not-to-exceed (NTE) appointment and at the expiration of this appointment, or whenever services are no longer needed, the selectee will be terminated from Federal service.
