Uses specialized expertise to lead, assess, measure and evaluate the facility Patient Safety Program in compliance with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and external regulations including The Joint Commission, Office of Inspector General (OIG), System-wide Ongoing Assessment Resource Strategy (SOARS), etc.
Develops, implements, and maintains clinical responsibility of the facility Patient Safety Program to improve the use of facility resources.
Utilizes relevant theory to identify, analyze and trend data to resolve problem areas in Patient Safety.
Contributes to the development of standards for professional practice, as required, by accrediting bodies and applicable regulations.
Interprets and assures compliance of all Patient Safety policies and procedures.
Possesses a basic understanding of the following:
a. Organization and administration of a multifaceted health care delivery system.
b. Specialty and subspecialty care.
c. Educational and performance improvement principles.
d. Root cause analysis (RCA), sentinel events, and Healthcare Failure Mode Effects and Analysis (HFMEA) Reviews.
e. Database management.
f. Accreditation standards.
g. Evaluation techniques, including statistics, research methodology and program evaluation.
h. Group process/team development.
Practices in a nonjudgmental, nondiscriminatory manner and is sensitive to diversity.
Assures that patient confidentiality and privacy is maintained.
Provides accurate information to patients and staff when ethical issues arise.
Demonstrates knowledge of compliance with the ethical resolution processes.
Collaborates and coordinates facility level patient safety changes that influence efficiency, quality and/or cost for organizational operations.
Analyzes and prioritizes program resource utilization and its impact on the mission, goals and productivity of the organization.
Evaluates options and selects a course of action which will result in the most favorable patient and organizational outcome.
Develops and maintains expertise in the area of practice and serves as a patient safety resource at the Facility, VISN 6, and VHA level.
Consults with nursing and physician leaders regarding the delivery of health care and to establish safe environments and standards for patient care.
