The Pathways Internship Program serves as one of the agency's succession planning programs intended to assist in the need for leadership continuity by employing outstanding students that are enrolled in a major that leads to a bachelor's degree or higher in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (S.T.E.M). The Program provides students, in accredited colleges and universities, with paid opportunities to explore federal careers while completing their education.
Currently we are recruiting for engineering students with a focus on electrical, electronics, aerospace, mechanical, computer, or industrial engineering.
We are looking for highly motivated student interns with an expected graduation of May 2019 or later to help with FAA succeed in its Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) research efforts. NextGen uses 21st Century technologies to meet future demands, improve aviation safety, and protect the environment.
If you are selected for this position, you will be working in a team setting with other professionals from various disciplines such as computer science, engineering, mathematics, and statistics, etc., The ideal candidate will possess analytical and communication skills sufficient to select and modify appropriate methods of operation, analyze, and interpret results. Successful candidates selected for these positions will also engage in technical support projects including, but not limited to research, technology, development, engineering studies, and risk analysis. You will be responsible for activities that are required to support the development of standards and policies necessary to maintain the elements of the FAA’s aviation systems. In addition, you will be required to demonstrate the ability to prepare reports and briefings to communicate information to various audiences.

APPOINTMENT: This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 120 day beyond your expected graduation date.
AGREEMENT: All participants must sign a written Pathways Internship Agreement with the FAA that clearly identifies expectations of the appointment such as duties, length of appointment, work schedule, training, mentorship, etc.
CONVERSION: Although it is not guaranteed, an intern may be converted from the internship program to a permanent excepted service position without further competition after successful completion of the educational program (awarding of degree), completion of a minimum of 640 hours of career-related work, required training, mentorship, and other requirements in accordance with the intern's participant agreement.
TERMINATION: Participation in this program may be terminated at any time.

Degree: professional engineering.
