These are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Shenandoah National Park is April - October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: mid-April 2018
It is expected that 2-7 vacancies will be filled at this time. Some of the positions will be assigned to the Sanitation Work Group focused mainly on the collection and disposal of trash and refuse and cleaning and minor maintenance of public restroom/comfort stations and park visitor centers; duty station for these positions is at Big Meadows Maintenance Area. Other positions will be assigned to the Building and Utilities Work Group focused mainly on trades work (carpentry, electrical, etc.) in the repair and maintenance of structures and utilities within the park; duty station for these positions is at Headquarters Maintenance Area.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Buildings and Utilities Work Group: Primary duties of these positions involve the maintenance of exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades. Sanitation Work Group: Primary duties of these positions involve the collection and disposal of trash and refuse, cleaning and maintaining visitor comfort stations and visitor centers, and checking buildings for proper function. All positions will operate vehicles in the performance of assigned duties for transportation of self and others and materials and equipment to and from work sites.
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands: May work from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.
Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.

The park consists of approximately 197,000 acres of land, including 80,000 acres designated as wilderness. It also contains 105 miles of Skyline Drive and 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Annual visitation is around 1.3 million, which has direct and extensive economic impact on the surrounding area (eight counties and nine municipalities). The park's natural, cultural and recreational resources are of vital interest to local and regional businesses, political leaders, conservation and outdoor recreation organizations, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
