Explore a career with the BLM - where our people are our greatest natural resource. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) manages more land – approximately 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estates throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
BLM is offering dynamic and energetic students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience serving as a Student Trainee (Administrative) in the Montana State, North Central Montana District Office, Division of Support Services (1 position) and the Lewistown Field Office (1 position). Both positions will be duty stationed in Lewistown, Montana. Information about the Lewistown area can be found at the Lewistown Chamber of Commerce website.
These are temporary student internship opportunities under the Pathways Program. The major objective of the Pathways Program is to employ students, giving them a chance to work in a Federal agency and resume or continue their education without interruption caused by financial pressure. The student selected for each position must be able to work at least part-time while school is in session and full-time during the summer months and during periods when the school is officially closed. Each student must be able to physically report to the Lewistown, Montana, duty location to fulfill the duties of the position.
Each position will be filled as a temporary, not-to-exceed September 30, 2018, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that may be extended incrementally based on Agency needs and funding. The Agency (BLM) may, but is not obligated to, convert the student to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service without further competition. This option will only be considered under rare and authorized circumstances.
Each selected student will be required to complete and sign a Participant Agreement that documents the anticipated start and end dates for their temporary appointment. For more information on the Pathways Program, please visit: http://www.opm.gov/HiringReform/Pathways/.
