This position is perfect for an entry level person looking for an opportunity to work on cutting-edge transportation safety issues in a fast paced, dynamic environment. This position is in the Energetic Materials Branch, Approvals and Permits Division (APD) of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. The incumbent will have the opportunity to work as a team member and effectively communicate both orally and in writing, represent the agency in conferences and meetings, work on multiple projects, research information on regulatory issues and make recommendations to leadership based on the review of approval applications and the associated Hazardous Materials Regulations for explosives, fireworks, self-reactive, organic peroxides and fireworks certification agencies.
Your responsibilities will include serving in the Energetic Materials Programs. These are national and international programs affecting the safe transportation of hazardous materials in, to and through the United States. When appropriate, the APD will grant approvals and special permits which provide regulatory relief to implement new technology, enhance public safety and ensure global economic competitiveness while maintaining the required levels of transportation safety. The APD receives, coordinates, evaluates, and manages action on more than 10,000 classification approvals applications per year, which is a written authorization from the Associate Administrator or other designated Department official, to perform a function for which prior authorization is required under the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the following: computer science, mathematics, electronics, physical sciences, information management, engineering, telecommunications, or other fields related to the position.
-This is a one year appointment in the excepted service which may lead to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service.
-Recent graduates serve a trial period for the duration of their excepted service appointment.
-Recent graduates will be required to sign a Pathways Recent Graduate Participant Agreement.
