DUTIES:
The Staff Nurse is a professional nurse at an intermediate level of development. As progression is made in the nursing profession, it is expected that leadership skills and competencies will be sustained with expertise and a broad-based clinical knowledge to effectively implement health promotion. The nurse is obligated to ongoing, comprehensive evaluation and improvement of clinical practice and health care delivery systems to meet the needs of patients in the Special Procedure Clinic, Day Procedure Program (DPP)/Post Anesthesia Unit (PACU)/Endoscopy Procedures clinic and is based on current and anticipated trends in health care. The Staff Nurse may also be required to cover in the Ophthalmology clinical area. The Staff Nurse will demonstrate and maintain critical care and clinic core and unit specific competencies. The Staff Nurse will demonstrate the ability to lead nursing staff in performance of nursing care at the unit or team level. Is responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. Considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs. The Staff Nurse is responsible for safety and infection control practices on the unit, working with the nurse manager to ensure compliance with regulations are met. The Staff Nurse is responsible for assessment and documentation of assessment for various procedural and clinic patients, and for the completion of clinical reminders. Additionally, the Staff Nurse will be responsible for critical assessments in the DPP/PACU using critical care knowledge and skills for both phase I and phase II recovery patients. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Moderate Sedation competencies are required in specific specialty areas.
The Staff Nurse will be expected to have knowledge of surgical ophthalmic procedures, including cataract and pterygium excision, and have the ability to oversee the instrument(s) and equipment set-up, for the case utilizing preference cards, and anticipates needs of the surgeon. The Staff Nurse will be required to demonstrate competency to circulate for and act as primary scrub for surgical ophthalmic procedures. The Staff Nurse will perform as a perioperative nurse , being competent to complete assessments, planning, and implementation of nursing intervention and evaluation.
The position may require extended periods of standing. Candidates must have the ability to stand for extended periods. Travel to Temple, TX will be required for in processing and orientation of approximately one month based on experience and progression through orientation.

Physical Requirements:
The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. CTVHCS is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
· U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
· Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
· The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
· Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
