This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-11. At the GS-09 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-11. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
This position is located in the Biomedical Engineering Section of the VA Medical Center in St. Louis, MO. The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist is responsible for the on-site technical support of medical equipment and systems within the various clinics throughout the facility. This support includes pre-purchase evaluation, clinical applications, clinical training, technical training, utilization, installation, maintenance, repair, modification, accident investigation, life expectancy, and replacement. These systems include state of the art, highly sophisticated instrumentation, network interfacing, and state of the art microprocessor based digital-imaging systems (MBDIS). The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist serves as a consultant to the clinical and administrative staff on technical principles, good manufacturing practices, and clinical applications. The position is critical to the delivery of high quality patient care.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The duties of this position can be physically demanding and involve walking, sitting, bending, standing, and long periods of intense concentration. Lifting objects between 10 and 50 pounds is common, and on occasion lifting heavier objects is necessary. Climbing on ladders and scaffolds is common place and contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination. The work performed is of a precise nature requiring long periods of concentration that is often interrupted. The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist is often faces with changing priorities and meeting deadlines, and must frequently deal with other medical center personnel or patients who may be uncooperative or hostile due to circumstantial pressures. The work is performed in clinical settings. This can range from and office or laboratory setting, to clinical areas around patients and medical personnel. Work involves numerous moving parts, steam lines, hot/cold water lines, electricity, and exposure to hazardous chemicals and diseases. Special safety precautions must be taken when working in non-ionizing radiation and infectious environments. The potential for electric shock is continuous, but completely avoidable through industry-accepted practices. There is an additional hazard of nosocomial infection while working in clinics, isolation areas, wards, laboratories, etc. due to exposure to bacterial or viral agents, caustic materials, chemical hazards, and contamination. The Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist will occasionally work with hazardous materials.
Participation in seasonal influenza program may be required.
