The Health Technician (Hearing) position
performs the duties in Audiology Service of the Surgical & Specialty Care
Service Line of the VA Black Hills Health Care System, located in Rapid City,
SD. These duties include, but are not limited to: · Performs routine repairs of all hearing aid delivered or
mailed to the Audiology clinic at the Community Based Outreach Clinic (CBOC). · Operates tools and equipment that range from simple
brushes to computer-operated systems. · Provides primary level troubleshooting and repair for
veterans who are experiencing hearing aid problems. · Provides counseling regarding common hearing aid problems
and good communication habits and operating hearing aid controls. · Operates fine-handled tools in complicated and often
stressful situations. · Cleans and repairs hearing aids; otoscope to inspect and
demonstrate factors of the external ear and internal components of hearing
aids; electronic and air-powered devices to test, clean and rejuvenate devices.
· Makes impressions of the ear canal for earmolds or custom

Physical Requirements: The duties of the position require periods of sitting, standing and walking. Working with patients in the clinic and on the wards requires regular sitting, bending and standing. Some lifting of light items is required in stocking clinics. Patient transport occasionally requires the pushing of wheelchairs. Work in front of a CRT of up to 8 hours per day is required. Some stressful situations may occur when communicating with patients and their families who may have multiple physical, mental and psychosocial problems and needs.
Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations where patients receive care or who come into contact with VA patients as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, paid and unpaid, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, students, researchers, volunteers, and trainees who work at these facilities.

Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-5 you must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience Performing various procedures in the clinic. Preparing patients for the audiologists testing and/or examination and procedure set up. Determining/making appropriate hearing aid repairs and ear mode tube replacement and cleaning. Performing non-patient care tasks, data processing, scheduling, and incoming/outgoing mail.

Applicants may substitute successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled for the GS-5 grade level.

To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned).
