As a Biological Science Technician, you will be responsible for organizing and conducting ecological and biological studies in aquatic systems (fresh water and marine), on land, and in a laboratory. Studies would require following standard procedures, observing and recording data, or performing various analytical tests. You will collect ecological site information about flora or fauna population distribution, condition, trends, associated species, hydrology and hydraulics, geology, and soil types. Prepare, examine, and identify field and lab samples, such as fish, invertebrates, plants, and soils, according to standard procedures. Enter field and lab data into spreadsheets or databases You will also assist with the preparation of scientific recommendations and publications (i.e., reports, peer reviewed journal articles, other types of technology transfer) based on the results of the ecological studies.

This position is covered by the Laboratory Personnel Demonstration Project. Pay Band DE-03 includes General Schedule grades equivalent to GS-08/09/10. To qualify for DE-03 level applicants must possess specialized experience equivalent to the DE-02 level or GS-07 grade level.
Experience required:
To qualify, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level/band (DE-02/GS-07). Specialized experience is defined as organizing, executing, and conducting field and laboratory studies focused on various ecosystems and the biological communities within them; collecting and processing samples associated with studies focused on fisheries biology, plant ecology, forestry, wildlife biology, ecosystem ecology, population ecology, community ecology, marine ecology, invertebrate ecology, or soil science; operating, maintaining, and trouble shooting a range of field and laboratory equipment; and recording and compiling research results and data using standard field equipment.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Work may require physical exertion such as walking, bending, crouching, stretching, reaching, and similar activities on terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous, and densely vegetated. Work may be performed in an outdoor environment including navigable rivers, nearshore, and areas ranging from very cold and wet to very hot and dry. This work may require physical exertion over very steep, wet, muddy, slippery, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.
Work may require collecting samples on a boat or submerged in waist-high water (about 3 to 4 feet) for extended periods of time.
Lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 lbs is necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This may include tools, personal protective equipment, and food and water to complete tasks away from vehicles for extended periods.
