Incumbent will serve as a pharmacy technician for evening shift. The technician will be included in the holiday rotation and may cover leave for the overnight technicians. The technician will effectively perform a full range of inpatient drug distribution duties. These include assisting the inpatient pharmacy IV program, stocking medication carts, delivering medications to the floors, Omnicell and OR/Clinic replenishment, monitoring expiration dates of pharmacy stock and nursing units, replenishing crash carts, and Scriptpro prescription processing for emergency room outpatient services as well as providing care for the veterans being admitted from the emergency room on the evening tour. The technician will assist the pharmacist in prioritizing, processing and delivery of all IV and PO doses to maintain the consistency of overall pharmacy services both to inpatients and emergency room patients. The technician will assists with the stocking of drugs, solutions, supplies and will be responsible for ordering IV and irrigation solutions for the pharmacy.
The technician will also collect data for quality improvement purposes. Incumbent is responsible for processing and filling orders for scheduled and non-scheduled federal legend drugs and supplies, including the preparation of IV admixtures. The technician will process controlled substances for Omnicell and fill outpatient controlled prescriptions as required. Responsible for training of technicians, or students assigned to employee tour. Assists with procurement of pharmaceutical supplies as needed and works closely with patients and healthcare staff to meet the needs of the customer. The technician will perform all duties of lower graded technicians if required.

This experience includes the following: Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving little guidance from more experienced staff members for more complex patients and procedures, and require minimal supervision. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
Certification. PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above.
Assignments. Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.
2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.
3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.
4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.
5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.
6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
Preferred Experience: At least one year of on the job experience compounding sterile products, including oncology agents, using aseptic technique.
