About the Position:
The Headquarters offices and Dredge Wheeler dock are located in the uptown area of New Orleans overlooking the Mississippi River near Audubon Park. Free long-term vehicle parking is available for Wheeler employees near the ship's dock. Duty station is New Orleans, LA and the work is performed aboard the US Dredge Wheeler where located), a 410-foot, seagoing dredging ship home ported at the New Orleans District. While there is no requirement to live in the New Orleans area, applicants should realize that paid transportation to and from the vessel is generally not provided. The incumbent will be required to live aboard the Dredge Wheeler during his/her tour of duty, which will be approximately 2 weeks on duty/ 2 weeks off duty. When not in port during the duty tour, the Wheeler will be on dredging mission mostly in the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and the mouth of the river, but also occasionally in any deep draft US sea port in the Gulf of Mexico, and deployable on emergency missions elsewhere.

As the Third Assistant Engineer, Diesel, the incumbent is required to stand regularly scheduled watches which include leaving the engine room at prescribed intervals during the watch to conduct routine inspection of all engineer spaces and equipment including dredge pumps, bow thruster, steering gear, and emergency generator areas. Makes minor and routine repairs to operating machinery during assigned watch. Assists Chief Engineer and other senior engineers with major repairs to any equipment or machinery throughout the dredge.
