The APRN will carry a caseload of broad-based patient population of adult and geriatric Veteran's. He/she will demonstrate competence in providing care to patients with traditional presentation, and also to patients with complex psychiatric problems. The APRN will demonstrate satisfactory performance in the skill set specific to psychiatric advanced nursing practice: Conducting comprehensive histories; ordering and interpreting appropriate lab and diagnostic testing; making changes in treatment regimen as indicated; initiating consults and referrals; and consulting with collaborating physicians when indicated. The APRN will incorporate the health promotion, disease prevention, and treatment focus of the core competencies of psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner practice in his/her day to day care of patients and their families. The APRN will have a complete understanding of DSM-5 criteria and how to apply this to interviewing and diagnosing the patient; comprehensive knowledge of psychopharmacology and how to use the appropriate mediations, monitor these meds, draw blood levels, etc.; and order ancillary treatments such as psychotherapy, group therapy, etc.
The APRN collaborates as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team. He/she regularly communicates with VA primary care providers to enhance quality and cost-effective services for patients and to effect positive changes. The APRN coordinates referral and ongoing access to the variety of mental health and other health care services available to patients. The APRN should seek input from members of the interdisciplinary treatment team and make adjustments to treatment plans based upon feedback. He/she will attempt to communicate frequently with members of the treatment team involved in care of Veteran's assigned to his/her caseload. He/she maintains close communication with homeless case management staff and SUDC services. The APRN regularly participates in BH and MHC meetings. He/she may seek help with questions about complex cases from MD/peers for complex problem solving. The APRN will actively work to build alliance with co-workers and with peers working in the community.
The APRN is compliant with the ethical standards outlined in the Psychiatric-Mental Health NP competencies. He/she maintains confidentiality and professionalism with patients, their families, and with their peers. He/she abides by the limitations of his/her scope of practice and medical staff bylaws, rules, regulations, and ethical guidelines. He/she is a strong patient advocate and supports the Patient Bill of Rights.
Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and bend and reach with hands and arms. Must give good manual dexterity and keyboarding skills are essential. Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Must obtain impressions through the eyes of shape, size, distance, motion, color or other characteristics of objects. Must be able to view and read information on computer screens. Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move 45 pounds or more. Must be able to carry 25 pounds short distances.
Nurse Practitioners are Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) who are masters degree-prepared registered nurses who also possess advanced clinical certification. They function with a scope of practice rather than a position description, commensurate with their training, experience and licensure. An APRN functions autonomously within the defined SOP in a variety of settings, such as hospital inpatient, outpatient clinics, nursing home, domiciliary, or patient's home.
A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. (Certifications must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected).
