The selectee is responsible for the design and support of medical systems at Boston Healthcare System (BHS) and the associated outreach clinics. He/She will be primarily responsible for directing of the entire life cycle of all patient-related medical equipment systems. The equipment life-cycle will encompass pre-purchase equipment comparative evaluations, site-planning, site preparation, problem analysis, coordination of outside contractors, installation, clinical and technical training, preventive maintenance, repairs and incident investigation. He/She will also provide technical advice in respect to eventual replacement of these medical systems. The wide array of systems will include state of the art, highly sophisticated and complex electronic and computerized biomedical instrumentation. The selectee must have a thorough understanding, knowledge and experience in the theories, techniques and applications of electricity and advanced analog and digital electronics. He/she must maintain through familiarity with new equipment design trends and repairs of rapid changing electronic equipment that is being introduced into the health care field. This will necessitate that the incumbents participate and successfully complete technical training courses supplied by the manufacturer, and also to be knowledgeable and make extensive use of their dedicated service publications and associated software.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Specialized experience of the Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BESS) consists of installing, troubleshooting and repairing complex medical devices for patient diagnosis and treatment. This work experience must be equivalent to the next lower grade level that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must be documented on the resume.
APPLICANTS MEETING THE QUALIFICATION STANDARDS WILL BE EVALUATED ON THE FOLLOWING KSAOS:
Knowledge of analog and digital electronics, electro mechanics, electricity, hydraulics, pneumatics, chemistry, anatomy, physiology and medical terminology in order to inspect, install, repair complex medical equipment for patient safety and operator use.
Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair state of the art biomedical equipment and systems.
Knowledge of the codes and standards of VA, Joint Commission, NFPA, AAMI, FDA and AHA as they apply to safety and operation of medical instrumentation.
Ability to communicate technical information effectively orally and in writing to a wide variety of audiences.
