The incumbent, under the supervision of the supervisor, displays proficiency and performs at a level of excellence in all EKG procedures and other related procedures in accordance with the guidelines established and policies and procedures of VA Black Hills Health Care System.
The incumbent independently performs the full range of electrocardiograph procedures, and related examinations, such as applying ambulatory monitoring devices, scanning Holter tapes/disks, Holter monitor strips and editing EKG, Holter, and treadmill reports. Utilizes MUSE cardiology storage systems, operates diagnostic medical equipment as a part of the treatment for the patient, supports Respiratory Therapists and physicians with exercise tolerance testing system, Holter monitoring scanner and Pulmonary Function Equipment. Receives request and/or, consults for procedures. Interprets request from physician for appropriateness of requested procedure for patient's ability perform prescribed test. Receives assignment for which clear precedents exist. Receives assignments that require application of standard procedures or that have special procedures identified and explained. Employee understands and carries out the appropriate requests made by practitioners or seeks assistance of the supervision when an uncommon, unique or new procedure is requested. Instructs patient pre-procedure to assure confidence and cooperation of patient during procedures. Independently explains various procedures including need for positions on table or treadmill, monitoring equipment, adverse reactions to stressing agents. Explains requirements for accurate monitoring and necessity of diary entries. Answers question by patient and or family members.
Performs Medical Instrument Technician work with stress test specialty. This requires experience in operating, supervising the operation of the instructing in the operation of specialized equipment related to the specialization of the position. Performs MI Tech work with Holter Monitoring specialty. This specialty area requires experience in applying, operating and instructing in Holter Monitoring equipment. The complying of data, revising reports and completing reports for physician review. Assists the scheduling of patients for application and removal of monitors. Instructs in the operation of EKG equipment to nursing staff, in-patient care and clinic areas. Instructs the physicians and cardiology staff in the storage and use of the MUSE System.
This incumbent must be reliable, able to work independently and be self-motivated. The MIT-EKG is responsible for performing job duties in accordance with mission, vision, and values of VA Black Hills Health Care System.
Location: The position is located in the Cardiology Section of Respiratory Therapy in the Diagnostics Service Line at Fort Meade, SD.
Work Schedule: 80 hours biweekly, this position involves rotating shifts, holidays, nights, and weekends. Employee must report to facility within 20 minutes of receiving a call back.

Physical Requirements:Work is primarily performed in patient care areas, in-patient and outpatient. Extensive interaction with patients, staff, physicians, family members, and visitors is involved. Moving equipment and supplies, assisting patients, bending, stooping and possible exposure to body fluid is involved. Exertion in lifting, pushing, and carrying equipment and supplies > 50 pounds is routine as is walking and standing for long periods of time.

Preferred Experience: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level.

This would be experience which provided the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to independently conduct EKG examinations. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

2) Ability to independently perform testing.
3) Knowledge of indications for EKG testing.
4) Ability to recognize irregular rhythms during testing and identify acute MI patterns, reporting findings to physician accordingly.
(c) Certification. No certification or registration is required. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is desirable.
