This is an Excepted Service,Schedule D, 213.3112(a)(2), position temporary appointment not-to-exceed one year. This appointment may be extended each year without further competition, as long as the incumbent continues to meet the eligibility requirements under the Pathways Internship program and funding is available. Your internship and employment with us will be terminated either upon completion of your education program or failure to comply with Pathways requirements.
Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
The position would be duty stationed on the island from May through August and duty stationed on the mainland from September through April. There is no government housing available in Houghton.

The major responsibility for this position is to perform basic archeological field surveys recording all necessary data for use within cultural resource programming at management at Isle Royale National Park. Surveys will entail walking over the landscape and searching for archeological features and artifacts. The technician will record data and prepare survey records (e.g., GPS, site maps, photographs, field notes, site monitor forms, etc.). Limited supervised excavation and testing of sites may be necessary, including the careful recovery of sample materials. Duties include completing standard feature and level forms, screening soils to recover artifacts, processing specimens recovered in the field, and maintaining all field equipment and supplies. The technician may be required to prepare specimens to be sent to dating laboratories. All recovered artifacts will be identified, labeled, and packaged for curation. Additionally, the technician will maintain all associated databases, forms, maps, and files. Further, the incumbent will perform data entry related to archeological artifact and project data (e.g., artifact information, catalog records, field notes, site records, etc.) into automated systems, appropriate forms, and archival records. The technician will retrieve and compile data as required for resource management reports, interpretive exhibits, etc. All activities will be in coordination with the Park Archeologist.
AREA INFORMATION: This position will require living in the local area and working at the mainland headquarters in Houghton, Michigan. The island portion of the park is located approximately 70 miles from the headquarters and is accessed via the park ship, Ranger III, from Houghton or the Isle Royale Queen IV from Copper Harbor, Michigan. Houghton is a town of approximately 7500 residents and houses Michigan Technological University. The University is known for its Engineering and Forestry Programs and has an average enrollment of 7,000. The bordering town of Hancock has a residential population of approximately 4500 and houses Finlandia University with an average enrollment of 400 students. This International University is known for its Art and Design program. Park housing is not available for this position. The average cost of rentals in the nearby area ranges from $500 to $800 per month.
This is a small town community with the amenities to serve two Universities. The area houses two hospitals, numerous clinics, three fitness centers, two performing arts centers, and numerous restaurants. This is a tourist destination which offers scenic overlooks, bike paths, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, and boating opportunities, countless lakes and miles of Lake Superior shoreline. Winter snowfall is abundant, averaging between 150 and 200 inches per year. Winter recreational activities include down-hill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.
