The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System is seeking a board-certified/board-eligible physician to serve as the Associate Chief of Staff of for Education (ACOS/E). The ACOS/E is responsible for operational and strategic oversight of VA professional training programs and trainees, including medical students, medical residents and fellows and other healthcare professionals. VAAAHS is a major affiliate of the University of Michigan Medical School and other academic institutions. Candidates should have a background in medical education, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and qualify for a faculty appointment at the University of Michigan. The ACOS/E reports to the Chief of Staff and also serves as part of the clinical leadership team at VAAAHS.
JOB DUTIES
a. Serves as the VA Liaison to the Graduate Medical Education Council of the affiliated institution, University of Michigan.
b. Facilitates appointment of Veteran's Affairs staff and appropriate affiliate institution program faculty to the Academic Partnership Council.
c. Reviews and signs appropriate residency training program letters of agreement prepared by the affiliated institutions.
d. Chairing the Graduate Medical Education Committee (Residency Review Committee) and reporting quarterly to the Clinical Executive Board on the safety and quality of patient care provided to trainees.
e. Presents an annual report to the Medical staff and the Medical Director that summarizes training program activities for the past year. This annual report should cover such issues as resident duty hours, resident credentials, resident graduated levels of responsibilities.
f. Acts as the principal liaison with sponsoring institutions' designated institutional officials (DIO) and education leaders in the academic programs.
g. Assures that students and residents rotating to VAAAHS are sponsored by affiliated institutions and that affiliation agreements are in place.
h. Ensures ALL trainees are appointed properly with completed applications and without compensation (WOC) Letters as well as appropriate security screening.
i. Provides orientation or assurance that necessary aspects of orientation are covered at the service level, including privacy training, computer security training, and Computerized Patient Records System (CPRS) Training.
j. Reviews and assures that minimal qualifications and credentials are met for trainees.

Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is required. This is a designated drug testing position. After appointment, you will be subject to random testing for illegal drug use. he physical requirements of this position include occasional lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion, and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be an occasional need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness, and hazardous materials.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Basic Requirements:
· Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
· Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
-Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
-Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
-For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
· Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
· Completion of residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies are:
-Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed,
OR
-Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.

Preferred Experience:
· Candidates that have prior experience as a clinical director in a supervisory position managing clinical operations.
· Candidates that qualify for an appointment to the University of Michigan Medical School faculty at the Associate Professor or Professor level. Faculty appointment in the University of Michigan Medical School requires national academic recognition with demonstrated skills in clinical care, research, teaching and administration.
