Position Location: Shenandoah National Park is located in Virginia, approximately 90 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. The park consists of approximately 197,000 acres of land, including 80,000 acres designated as wilderness. It also contains 105 miles of Skyline Drive and 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Annual visitation is around 1.1 million, which has direct and extensive economic impact on the surrounding area (eight counties and nine municipalities). The park's natural, cultural and recreational resources are of vital interest to local and regional businesses, political leaders, conservation and outdoor recreation organizations, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This position is assigned to the Ranger Activities Division and staffs the Shenandoah National Park Communications Center. The purpose of this position is to provide support to visitor and resource protection operations, including law enforcement, wildland and structural fire suppression/pre-suppression programs, emergency medical services programs, search and rescue programs, and to other public safety programs. Duties include:
- Serves as the central point of contact for emergency calls received via telephone or radio. Processes calls for service, establishes priorities, and then coordinates and dispatches appropriate resources.
- When warranted, provides pre-arrival emergency medical dispatch instruction to callers.
- Processes a large volume of incoming telephone calls received on multi-truncated business lines, inter-office lines and emergency lines.
- Provides radio dispatch support for Law Enforcement activities and other emergency services/public safety incidents.
- Monitors and coordinates all park radio traffic on a multi-frequency radio network.
- Operates a complex law enforcement telecommunications system interfaced with local, state, national and international law enforcement communications networks. Must obtain appropriate certification for use of equipment and must pass mandatory background check.
- Monitors alarm systems; ensure proper response in the event of activation.
- Organizes, compiles and maintains a variety of record systems.
Physical Demands: Incumbent must function efficiently in a confined space for extended periods with no breaks and no opportunity to leave the confines of the Communications Center. The dispatcher is considered an "essential employee," meaning will be required to work most holidays, report for duty during adverse weather conditions, and be expected to work for long hours exceeding normally scheduled shifts in case of emergencies. Position is sedentary with high amounts of stress. Requires working rotating shifts and uncommon tours of duty. Requires the use of your voice in vocal communications for periods of hours at a time. Voice must be clear, audible, and tone effective with words plainly spoken and understandable. Incumbent must be able to hear clearly and discern a variety of audible communications and signals simultaneously. Must be able to read critical information from multiple sources, including computer screen, fax, and written log quickly and accurately. the work is of an emergency nature and is emotionally stressful. Must possess manual dexterity sufficient to operate computer terminals/keyboards and related equipment and to maintain written logs. Work also involves occasional lifting of boxes and supplies up to weights of 50 pounds.
Work Environment: Work is normally performed in a well lighted and temperature controlled room. Noise levels are routinely high due to electronic equipment, telephones, radios, and other discussions ongoing in the performance of duties. The setting is typically confined and secure, and entrance and egress is controlled. During training periods and/or other occasions, the incumbent may be assigned to accompany field law enforcement personnel in patrol vehicles to learn or gain a more detailed familiarization with agency field operating procedures and jurisdictional boundaries. Incumbent may not leave the center unless relieved by another qualified dispatcher.
