This is the full performance level for inpatient pharmacy technicians. Employees at this grade level serve as staff pharmacy technicians receiving some guidance from more experienced staff members, especially for more complex patients and procedures.
Major duties include:
*Delivers completed medication orders, medication carts and prepared IV solutions to appropriate wards or clinics on a minimum hourly basis, and per facility policy recommendation for Stat, Now and Routine orders
*Reads and interprets orders/prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines the proper amount and counts, pours, measures and labels the medication and does the appropriate record keeping. After final check, dispenses the medication to an inpatient area, ward or unit-dose cart and fills the unit-dose carts with minimal supervision. Inventories and replenishes emergency carts with minimal supervision.
*Gathers stock and fills ward stock requests or replenishes automated dispensing units without secondary review and assures the dispensed items are entered into the computer system. Basic knowledge of daily operations and maintenance of various Pharmacy equipment routinely used by technical staff.
*Working knowledge of hospital computer systems for review of the patient's electronic medical record including adequate typing skills to complete data entry documentation and other quality improvement purposes.
*Collects unused medications or IV solutions and returns them to the Pharmacy, either returning the items to stock or isolates for destruction (as appropriate) after performing all necessary documentation and record keeping functions in the computer system.
*Packs/repacks medications required for filling orders and stock requests, including affixing readable bar-codes on applicable medication as needed.
*Compounds and/or reconstitutes oral or external medications (non-sterile) without a second review. This includes calculating and converting t(o proper weights and measures) the amount of drug or solution to be used.
*After prescription/order(s) are reviewed by a Clinical Pharmacist for therapeutic propriety, reviews orders for technical accuracy and converts the order, if necessary, so the item dispensed properly corresponds to the drug and dose ordered.
*Enters correct drug, strength, dosage form, and quantity into the hospital computer system for subsequent verification by authorized personnel
*Responds to inquiries on drug distribution from Pharmacy and non-Pharmacy, and identifies basic therapeutic problems such as, duplicate therapy, and alerts the Clinical Pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention.
*Assists in continuous quality improvement activities by participating in medical center and service process assessments and action teams, and continually seeks to improve services.
* Conducts timely monthly ward inspections in assigned patient care areas (and other areas as needed) to ensure appropriate storage conditions and drug accountability; accurately documents medication sstorage and expiration dates.
*Maintains, verifies, inventories, and replaces expired/damaged items Inpatient care areas and automated dispensing cabinets. Assist with the training of pharmacy students, pharmacy interns, and other personnel in departmental functions according to policy and procedure.
*Monitors inventory in Inpatient care areas, and relays this information to the Pharmacy Procurement Technician. Receives and distributes inventory in the absence of or assistance to the Procurement Technician. This includes placing stock in proper storage areas, rotating stock on shelves (as per policy) and removing/replacing/documenting expired/damaged items.
*Monitors the medication refrigerator temperature on a daily basis in assigned Patient Care Areas.
*Assists with Outpatient Pharmacy section workload and staffing: Window and Mail-Out Prescription Processing/Filling, Customer Service, Telephone Triage; as deemed necessary to maintain the consistency of overall Pharmacy services.
*Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule:Variable - Minimum every other weekend. Will
rotate between weekend days/evenings (7am -3:30pm, 2:30pm 11pm), holidays
& occasional weekdays included.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Requires standing for long periods. Requires frequent movement within work areas, regular and recurring bending, stooping, sitting and stretching. Requires manual dexterity and acute hearing. Must be able to distinguish colors.
Education or Experience. A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
Creditable Experience. To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with the scope of pharmacy technician practice.
Quality of Experience. To be creditable, pharmacy technician experience must be documented on the application and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means.
Grade Determinations For GS-05. In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met to be found qualified:
Experience. Education or Experience. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level below:
Ability to process and fill prescriptions under supervision.
Ability to operate and maintain dispensing equipment.
Ability to operate pharmacy information systems.
Ability to maintain appropriate files.
Ability to prepare sterile compounds under supervision.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs below:
Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.
Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.
Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
Preferred Experience: Experience working in an acute care (hospital) setting. National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Certification preferred.
