The Orlando Veterans Administration Medical Center is entering a new era in care for our veterans with expansion of facilities including a new hospital and growing educational and research partnerships. The Medical Center is seeking an Orthopedic Surgeon fellowship trained in upper extremity surgery or adult reconstruction. We highly prefer that they are board certified or board eligible in Orthopedic Surgery. U.S. Citizenship, current, full unrestricted license to practice medicine are required. As Orthopedic Staff Surgeon, incumbent is accountable to the Chief, Surgical Service, for assuring the most effective delivery of care in Orthopedic Surgery Section while meeting and exceeding compliance standards. The Orthopedic surgeon participates in and/or manages all aspects of a general orthopedic surgery program, to include inpatient and outpatient clinical, administrative, academic, and research components if warranted. The Orthopedic manages patient care workload within available staffing, which may include fee basis physicians, active duty military orthopedic surgeons, consultant physicians, contracted physicians, physician assistants, and may include surgical residents. The Orthopedic physician works effectively with Surgical Service administrative staff, Anesthesiology Section, Operating Room/Recovery Room Team, and the Surgical Clinic team which consists of Podiatry Section and Health Administration staff. The Orthopedic coordinates care with VA-DoD sharing partners, and with VA's tertiary care facilities. The Orthopedic physician performs the administrative components of patient care management, such as: provides dictation of progress notes, OP reports, discharge summaries, signatures, and consultation referrals for inpatients and outpatients, etc. The Orthopedic physician provides surgical treatment for patients with musculoskeletal injuries and diseases, including adult major joint reconstructive services. The Orthopedists supervises and trains physician assistants, medical students, and surgical residents if available. The Orthopedic physician must possess computer skills to access and input typed data on each patient into the computerized patient record system (CPRS). The Orthopedists performs other directly related duties as required.
The selectee may be required to work or travel between any of the locations within Corporate Orlando, including Daytona Beach and Viera. The selectee may also be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis, based on patient care needs.

Basic Requirements:

Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidates acceptability for residency training.
