The Physician (Psychiatrist) functions as the Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) program manager at the Alaska VA Healthcare System Muldoon Clinic. The program manager of the BHIP provides operations level leadership and supervision, either directly or indirectly, to BHIP Physicians, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, RNs, Psychologists and Psychiatric staff. The program manager must provide primary mental health care for VA patients 80% or 24 hours per week. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Conducts mental status exams, psychiatric histories, etc to produce accurate and complete diagnostic mental health assessments.Psychiatric diagnosis;Psychiatric treatment planning;Leading and/or participating in interdisciplinary treatment teams;Psychiatric treatment to mentally ill veterans, recruits, students, active duty personnel, dependents and retirees;Medication Management;Conduct other group therapy and/or education sessions;Educate clients in a variety of prevention, health promotion and maintenance interventions;Orders pertinent laboratory and diagnostic testing.Participate in all National and VISN level calls/trainings etc. for BHIP implementation and continued programming;Supports the Chief of Psychiatry, Chief of Social and Behavioral Health and the ACOS of Mental Health in developing quality improvement and Personnel Practices to enhance service provision.Work Schedule: Variable tours (Monday through Friday); may be required to work some evenings and weekends to meet the needs of the service.

Basic Requirements:
· U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
· Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
(4) For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.
· Licensure. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
· Residency. Physicians must have completed residency training in Psychiatry or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are:
(1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
(2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.
· English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
· Physical Requirements. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry; the Psychiatrist is an independent care provider who is highly skilled in the evaluation and treatment of mental health needs.
Note: Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification before the starting date of the position. The BLS requirement is satisfied by successfully completing an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider Course or Military Training Network (MTN).
