The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to 5 temporary positions at Bryce Canyon National Park. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. Bryce Canyon is a mid-sized National Park in Southwestern Utah. Named after the Mormon Pioneer Ebenezer Bryce. Bryce Canyon became a National Park in 1928. It is famous for its worldly unique geology, consisting of a series of horseshoe shaped amphitheaters carved from the eastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in Southern Utah. In addition to Bryce Canyon's hiking, camping, photography, horseback riding, and star gazing, recreation opportunities abound outside the park. Dixie National Forest and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument offer hiking, camping, mountain biking, and fishing opportunities. In addition, six National Park Service sites and three state parks are less than three hours from Bryce Canyon. Because of the high altitude (7,000 9,000 foot elevations) summers are relatively mild with day time temperatures rarely surpassing 90 degrees. Nighttime temperatures are cool (upper 40's to low 50's F). Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August.
Small grocery stores, restaurants, service stations, a church and K-12 schools are located in Tropic (10 miles away). The nearest medical facilities are in Panguitch (28 miles). Cedar City (80 miles) has movie theaters, clothing stores, full-service grocery stores, and department and home improvement stores.

Provides front-line information and interpretive services for visitors in the daily operation of Bryce Canyon National Park. Performs a variety of duties related to the effective interpretation of the natural and cultural history of Bryce Canyon National Park. Work in an extremely busy Visitor Center which assists up to 4,500 visitors a day. Research, develop and present a full range of interpretive activities including guided walks, geology talks, Jr. Ranger programs, patio talks, hikes and evening programs for up to 200 visitors. Handle stressful situations and be able to make prudent decisions quickly, often without supervisorial assistance. Be flexible and willing to help out co-workers regularly throughout the day. Conduct roving assignments at viewpoints along the rim of the canyon and may be called into service during search and rescue and other emergency situations. Shifts may start as early as 7:30 am when opening the visitor center and could end as late as midnight when conducting evening programs and full moon hikes. The Park Ranger position in the Interpretation and Visitor Services Division engages directly in activities to educate, interpret and inform the public about the significance, uniqueness of park resources, conservation and ecologically sound practices developed to protect park resources and provide for their safe and non-consumptive use.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
Applicants must possess a valid state driver's license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. -OR- B. A 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related course work. One year of full time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours. -OR- C. Equivalent combinations of education and experience.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.
