Leads the USBG Visitor Services Team in the development of mission-related visitor experience initiatives to meet the needs and interests of USBG visitors and maximize return on USBG’s visitor services investments. Provides support and collaboration with other USBG supervisors and the Garden’s leadership team to ensure consistency in the delivery of visitor experience expectations. Demonstrates solidarity with all employees in striving to achieve the strategic goals outlined for USBG visitor service operations.
Observes visitor experience and employee performance throughout the Conservatory, outdoor gardens and other areas as needed. Ensures all members of the USBG Visitor Services Team are following assigned schedules for daily operations, including the following of standard operating procedures related to the Team’s responsibilities for the visitor experience. Reports problems with facilities and amenities. Based on real-time circumstances, identifies, authorizes and/or implements acceptable deviations from standard operating procedures to ensure issues with the visitor experience are appropriately addressed. Communicates with employees and colleagues regarding operational requirements and adjustments. Makes certain the operations of special events meet the Garden’s high standards and strict guidelines. As needed, leads tours of the USBG and/or provides coverage of critical posts.
Ensures the flow of visitors is safe and efficient in all assigned areas of responsibility. Initiates or takes corrective action on unsafe conditions in managed areas. Follows the direction of the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) during security situations. Partners closely with the USCP to ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations and appropriately adjusts USBG operations in response to emergency situations. Communicates USCP guidance, as needed, to USBG team and visiting public during normal operations and emergency situations.
Supervises employees performing work up to the GS-11 level in a team-centered atmosphere. May also include supervision of seasonal details and/or temporary positions as needed.
Performs administrative and technical supervisory functions for employee team. Schedules and assigns duties to these employees and evaluates their performance. Manages the team’s workload, allocating and adjusting in response to USBG priorities. Directs prioritization of duties as needed or appropriate. Develops performance objectives for direct reports and ensures a mutual understanding of the performance standards. Collaborates with employees to set and adjust short-term and long-term career goals and objectives. Resolves complaints and grievances as needed or delegated by higher-level supervisors. Recommends appointment, promotion or reassignment and develops work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary. Provides for employee skills enrichment through job-related coaching, mentoring and training.
Oversees the design and implementation of regular evaluations of USBG visitor experience procedures and makes recommendations for changes or improvements. Researches and develops visitor experience best practices to welcome a greater diversity of visitors.
Researches, develops and authors reports related to areas of responsibility. Gathers, interprets, analyzes and evaluates information necessary for reports.
Acts as the Contracting Officer's Representative as needed or directed. Researches, authors and prepares procurement documents, including requests for proposal/quote, scopes of work and small purchase requests. Works with contractors and vendors to ensure timely delivery of contracted or requested materials and services. Monitors contracts in accordance with AOC procurement policies and federal Appropriations Law.
Collaborates with the L&E Manager and Chief of Learning and Outreach to develop and disseminate print materials communicating USBG public programs and visitor services to a diversity of audiences. Works with the Media and Public Affairs Specialist, Visual Information Specialist and other L&E team members in the creation, implementation and/or distribution broadly of visitor experience messaging to the public. Provides information to USBG management pertinent to communications with stakeholders including the public, AOC and Congress. Contributes website, social media, cell phone tour, handout, brochure, exhibit and other visitor services content as requested. Works with the Media and Public Affairs Specialist to communicate visitor experience messaging to external customers and to customers within the USBG and the AOC.
