Incumbent serves as Engineering Equipment Operator (EEO) for all field activities. The incumbent assists with all the interment activities, headstone, building maintenance and the maintenance of the cemetery's complete inventory of vehicles and equipment. The incumbent also contributes to the overall quality of cemetery grounds maintenance by observing and reporting problems with contractor grounds maintenance activities to the supervisor. The EEO performs routine activities related to the core mission of the cemetery, interments, preventative building and equipment maintenance and repairs on all vehicles, equipment, buildings, facilities, roads and curbing. Operates one or more types of heavy equipment with multiple hand and foot controls such as a backhoe, to dig, push, pull, pile, and load earth. For example, the operator uses equipment that is fitted with a front-end loader to maneuver to a specific spot to transfer material from the ground into a dump truck. The equipment is used as a tool for the purpose of digging multiple graves and preparing grave sites for first and subsequent interments.
Work Schedule: Tour of Duty: Monday-Friday, day shift 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery the cemetery cannot be closed for burials for more than two (2) consecutive days at any given time. Therefore, when a federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or Saturday. All staff may be required to work Veterans Day and Memorial Day each year; and 50% or less of the staff may work the second Saturday of December for the placement of Wreaths Across America. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends, and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work. Occasional travel outside the duty area may be required for training/conferences.

Physical Requirements: Frequent arm and leg movements are required in operation of tractors, mowers, and other equipment. Physical demands on the incumbent consists of walking, bending, stooping, stretching, reaching, pushing, pulling, tugging, and climbing. Incumbent must be able to lift-up to 40 pounds. Incumbent should request assistance whenever performing tasks that require lifting more than 50 pounds. Must be able to walk on all types of terrain and soil conditions. Incumbent is required to wear personal protective equipment when applicable. Protective equipment includes personal protection for the eyes, hearing, face, head, back, extremities, protective clothing, respiratory devices and protective shields and barriers. The incumbent will make sure this equipment will be maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition. Due to the decibel level of noise employees are exposed to during their work shift, incumbent will ensure all employees adhere to safety guidelines and wear proper equipment while on the job.
Working Conditions: Work must be performed outdoors, and incumbent will be exposed to all types of weather throughout the year. Incumbent will be exposed to the sun, noise, extreme heat, and humidity, cold, snow, rain, wind, and is subject to dirt, dust, fumes (from motor and exhaust) mud, and water. Work is performed in areas where pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizers are applied. Appropriate protective equipment will be worn. The operator is exposed to injury from mishaps that may be involved in the operation of grounds maintenance equipment.
