Students eligible to apply must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate seeking program, attending at least half-time and in good standing (minimum overall Grade Point Average of 2.0). Enrollment must be with an accredited educational institution or state-approved home school.
Major Duties:
Incumbent will participate in basic archeological field surveys by walking over the landscape and searching for archeological features and artifacts. Records data and prepares survey records such as site maps, photographs, field notes, etc. Conducts limited supervised excavation and testing of sites, including the careful recovery of sample materials. Processes specimens recovered in the field and prepares specimens to be sent to dating laboratories. Identifies, labels, and packages artifacts for curation. Maintains field equipment and supplies. Maintains related databases, forms, maps, and files. Performs data entry into GIS systems, databases, spreadsheets and archival records.
Works cooperatively in a team environment. Field work is performed outdoors with exposure to heat, sun, insects, allergens, and other hazards. Work requires physical exertions such as bending, crouching, stooping, and lifting.
Area Information:
Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is located 2 miles north of the town of Chillicothe, Ohio on State Highway 104. Hopewell Culture is 50 miles south of Columbus, Ohio.
The park's location at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains has a moderate climate with seasonal weather. Summers are generally hot and humid with occasional thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures in the summer average between 80 to 90 degrees F. Winters are cold with occasional, moderate accumulations of snow generally less than six inches. Daytime temperatures in the winter average between 30 to 40 degrees F.
Chillicothe (population 22,000) provides K-12 schools, a branch campus of the Ohio University, a regional hospital, and a variety of stores, restaurants, motels, and banks. Columbus provides all modern amenities, collegiate opportunities, and cultural features of a major metropolitan area. Park housing is not available.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
Conversion: Although we do not currently anticipate this position to continue after you have completed your educational requirements, if you successfully complete your internship, you may be eligible for non-competitive placement into a term or permanent position if one should become available. Conversion into a term or permanent position is neither guaranteed or implied, but successful completion of your internship will give you the eligibility to be converted.
Interns may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment.

If selected, you will be required to sign a Pathways Agreement which specifies the conditions of your employment as we've indicated in this job announcement. You must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of your appointment. Failure to do so will result in termination of your internship and employment.
