An appointment as an AUSA with the U.S. Attorney's Office offers unique and challenging experiences for highly motivated attorneys seeking to represent the interests of the United States in a wide variety of federal litigation. This position is in the Monetary Penalties Unit in the Asset Recovery Unit of the Criminal Division. The applicant selected for this position will work with Criminal Division AUSAs on forfeiture-related issues in criminal prosecutions and have overall responsibility for all issues involving asset forfeiture, including investigations, seizures, restraint of assets, transferring title to the United States, litigating third party claims, and final disposition of assets. Monetary Penalties Unit AUSAs also handle all civil forfeiture matters in the District. Day-to-day responsibilities may include working with other AUSAs in the Criminal Division, law enforcement agents, research and writing, negotiating case resolutions, representation of the United States in federal court, and other litigation-related duties. The AUSA also will work with Financial Litigation Unit AUSAs to provide expert advice on restitution and enforcement remedies for cases involving victims.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Salary Information: Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $55,756 to $145,836, plus locality pay.

The United States Attorney (U.S. Attorney) for the Eastern District of Virginia has four offices which are located in Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk, and Newport News. Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) are assigned to each of these offices to prosecute criminal cases.
