The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will perform direct patient care within the Endocrinology Specialty of the Syracuse VAMC. Duties will include triaging consults (inpatient and outpatient), having 7-8 weekly specialty clinic sessions, and interacting with a multidisciplinary treatment team including medical trainees from Upstate Medical University. The Nurse Practitioner functions as a licensed independent practitioner collaborating with physicians, peers, and appropriate others in the health care community to develop and implement individualized patient/population treatment plans and supports the development of effective primary care team performance. The Nurse Practitioner functions to actively create a learning framework to advance translation of evidence into practice and support the training of health professional students.
The NP is responsible for facilitating the fulfillment of the Syracuse VAMC mission, vision, and values. The incumbent performs at an advanced level of nursing practice characterized by increased complexity of clinical decision-making. The NP provides direct patient care to a specific patient population. The incumbent is a skilled health care provider who utilizes critical judgment in the performance of comprehensive health assessments, differential diagnosis, ordering of diagnostic tests and the prescribing of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment in the direct management of acute and chronic illness and disease. The NP may provide specialized Department of Veterans Affairs VA Healthcare Network treatments to specific patient populations. The NP practice promotes wellness and prevents illness and injury. The NP works autonomously and in the interdisciplinary teams as resources and consultants. The role of this NP may include conducting research, providing education, and impacting public policy. The NP functions in diverse areas of practice including but not limited to acute /chronic care, primary care, and geriatrics. The incumbent is responsible for providing consistent ANA Standards of Advanced Nursing Practice within the Clinical Center across a complex multi-hospital system. The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for the provision of high-quality, customer-focused, cost effective care to specific patient populations within the Clinical area assigned with the Syracuse VAMC. The NP ensures compliance of advanced nursing practice with all applicable local, community, VISN or National professional statues and regulations. The incumbent ensures that the practice of nursing is consistent with external standards such as The Joint Commission (TJC) and internal standards such as the Clinical Practice Guidelines and the Performance Measures for preventive health and chronic disease management. The incumbent assesses the educational needs of specific patient populations and develops and implements an educational plan. The NP collaborates with other Nurse Practitioners and health care providers throughout the Syracuse VAMC and within the community to exchange knowledge and share clinical expertise.
