United States Attorneys conduct most of the trial work in which the United States is a party. The United States Attorneys have three statutory responsibilities: The prosecution of criminal cases brought by the Federal government, the prosecution and defense of civil cases in which the United States is a party, and the collection of debts owe the Federal government which are administratively uncollectible.
The United States Attorney's Office (USAO), Southern District of Illinois (SDIL), is a fast-paced, collegial, and energetic office which seeks to maintain the highest standards of excellence in the enforcement of federal laws and the representation of the United States. Our headquarters are located in Fairview Heights, Illinois, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. Our branch offices are located in Benton, Illinois, and East St. Louis, Illinois, in or near the federal courthouse. The office presently employs 32 attorneys and 29 support staff.
The Southern District of Illinois is comprised of the lower 38 counties of the State of Illinois and has a population of approximately 1.2 million. Our most populous counties, Madison and St. Clair, are adjacent to the Mississippi River and are within the St. Louis, Missouri metropolitan area.

An appointment with the U.S. Attorney's Office offers unique and challenging experiences for the highly motivated attorney. Working in the Criminal Division of the Southern District of Illinois, the Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) will be part of a dedicated team helping to enforce Federal criminal laws. The SAUSA will be primarily responsible for assisting with legal writing. The SAUSA may also have an opportunity to work on a variety of criminal cases. When possible, the SAUSA may be given the opportunity to participate in training related to investigating and prosecuting federal crimes.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
