JOB SUMMARY:

A career with the Forest Service will challenge you to manage and care for more than 193 million acres of our nation's most magnificent lands, conduct research through a network of forest and range experiment stations and the Forest Products Laboratory, and provide assistance to State and private forestry agencies.

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

The Duties listed at the full performance level of the position:

Participates as a member of interdisciplinary teams working on land management planning, emergency burn rehabilitation, or other Forest projects. Presents recommendations on treatment needs, estimates project costs, and prepares environmental analysis reports for restoration projects being considered for implementation. Prepares and carries out water quality monitoring programs. Evaluates data, identifies trends, and provides oral and written feedback on results.

Bachelor's Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources.

The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Acceptable experience must have included performance of scientific functions related to the study of water resources, based on and requiring a professional knowledge of related sciences and the consistent application of basic scientific principles to the solution of theoretical and practical hydrologic problems.

Specialized experience directly related to this position should be documented in the Work History section of the online application. Applicants are encouraged to provide a narrative in the Work History section that describes the duties performed relative to the specialized experience defined for this position. Show percentage of time performing these duties if work involved a variety of different duties, i.e., where only a portion of the work experience would be creditable for this position.

Qualifying experience for the GS-07 level includes at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level performing work related to the duties of this position. Examples of work experience include: assisting in assignments of limited scope and complexity which are designed to contribute to the continuing professional development of the employee; assisting in water resource inventories and prepares the resulting data; assisting in implementation of water resource improvement project plans.

Qualifying experience for the GS-09 level includes at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level performing work related to the duties of this position. Examples of work experience include: perform assignments of limited scope and complexity which are designed to contribute to the continuing professional development of the employee; Conduct water resource inventories and prepares the resulting data; Prepare and direct implementation of water resource improvement project plans; Evaluate impact of Forest management on the water resource.
