This position is located in the Registrar’s Office, Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM), Smithsonian Institution. It is responsible for a variety of technical and logistical duties involved in the packing, movement, installation and transportation of art objects and special art exhibitions. The shipping and packing section is responsible for all packing and shipping of art work to and from SAAM and Renwick Gallery. The museum organizes 10 exhibitions yearly sometimes across the country.

As a Museum Technician, the incumbent would perform the following duties:

The Smithsonian Institution has a mandate requiring all employees (federal and trust), affiliated staff

Specialized Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as experience packing and shipping art objects; preserving and protecting collections in transit, on view, and in storage; protecting are objects in transit through construction techniques such as bracing, padding, and crating; trackin art objects using computer-based information systems; and coordinating personnel and workspace in order to plan and meet shipping schedules and installation needs.

Education: One full year of graduate education or Superior Academic Achievement meets the requirements for GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
